“Guitar: The Instrument That Rocked the World” will open tomorrow at the Carnegie Science Center and continue through Sunday, September 30th. Opening Night features the “All-Star Acoustic Jam” from 8:00-11:30 PM with Joe Grushecky, Rick Witkowski, Rob James and Billy Price.
There will be acoustic performances every Saturday from 2:00-3:00 PM that are free with general admission.
Dennis Bateman, Carnegie Science Center Director of Exhibits, said, “Music is a great gateway introduction into science for people who might not necessarily think of themselves as ‘sciencey’ people. The science of acoustics, the engineering and electric guitar, how sound waves travel — it’s really full of science.”
More than 60 instruments are on display, exploring the science, sound, history and cultural impact of the guitar. H.P. Newquist is the Executive Director of the National Guitar Museum, which will be touring for the next several years before settling down in an as-yet-undetermined city. He said the guitar began in a parlor setting and was drowned out when it became part of larger, louder groups, so in many ways, its history is a search for louder sound.
