The Future of Psychiatric Diagnosis
The
Diagnostic Statistical Manual known as the
DSM, is the official classification book for mental disorders. It’s used for diagnosing and defining conditions such as autism, generalized anxiety and Alzheimer’s. The
DSM is currently in the process of a major revision.
Dr. David Kupfer, chair of the department of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh and chair of the
DSM-V Task Force, the group developing the revision, talks about the upcoming changes. And
Dr. Ellen Frank, taskforce member and professor of psychiatry and psychology at the University of Pittsburgh talks about the wide reaching influence of the
DSM.
